1994 year group hands over refurbished library to Ridge Church School
The refurbished library of the Ridge Church School, sponsored by the 1994 year group at a cost of GH¢40,000 has been handed over to the school.
As part of their 25th anniversary of leaving the Ridge Church School, the 1994 year group decided to refurbish the library of the school .
In addition to that, they also honoured one of the school’s longest-serving headmistresses, Mrs Afua Dake, who served for 29 years.
The Ridge Church School is a co-educational preparatory day school founded by the Accra Ridge Church in 1957.
At a ceremony to hand over the library on Wednesday, [December 4, 2019] the Project Lead for the 1994-year-group, Ms Boakyewa Glover, said they chose the library as part of efforts to encourage reading and learning.
She said “school libraries provide equitable access to books and resources, regardless of a student’s economic circumstances.”
She noted that libraries were “critical facets of learning-oriented schools” and that the newly refurbished library would go a long way to improve teaching and learning in the school.
Ms Glover explained that the gesture also formed part of the 1994-year-group’s vision to give back to the school for moulding them to become responsible adults.
“We love and appreciate our secondary school experience but we know beyond any doubt that our roots were firmly established at Ridge Church School,” she said, adding “Ridge School worked on our minds and our hearts, and the values they imbibed in us became permanent.”
She commended members of the 1994 year group for their various donations towards the completion of the library project and mentioned Mr Kweku Afful, who is their president in particular.
Ms Glover charged the students to make good use of the library, saying “We hope the students will enjoy this library, and make the most of it, and we envision that there are students who will be in this room, learning and reading, who will become great change-makers in their lives and the lives of others.”
She said the school desperately needed a high-tech science laboratory, with up-to-date equipment, and a sterile, comfortable environment to enable innovation and stimulate curiosity among students.
The Headmistress of the school, Nana Ama Acheampomaa Badasu, commended the 1994-year-group, saying the library would help to improve the performance of the students in the English language in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
She said the school would put the library to good use in order to achieve the purpose for which it was put up, pointing out that “we will use this edifice and take good care of it.”
A representative of the school’s board of governors, Ms Sharon Mills, expressed the gratitude of the board to the leadership and members of the 1994-year-group for the gesture.
The Girls’ Prefect of the school, Ms Wilhemina Blankson, said the library would whet the appetite of the students to read, hence commending the 1994-year-group for the gesture.
